The dream was simple: carry the atmosphere with you. Achieving it took centuries of pressure vessels, valves, experiments, and a decisive wartime collaboration.

The breakthrough

Cousteau, Gagnan, and a regulator that breathed on demand

In 1943, Jacques-Yves Cousteau brought a diver’s problem to engineer Émile Gagnan: compressed air had to arrive at ambient pressure, and only when the diver inhaled. Their collaboration produced the Aqua-Lung, a twin-hose, open-circuit apparatus. [4]

It was not the first self-contained underwater breathing apparatus, but it was reliable, practical, and commercially successful—turning autonomy into equipment that could be manufactured, taught, and improved.

Commerce meets exploration

U.S. Divers brings Aqua-Lung west

In the postwar United States, René Bussoz founded U.S. Divers and secured rights to distribute Aqua-Lung equipment. Cousteau later became closely involved with the company. [4] [5]

Technology made the dive possible; clubs, shops, media, and certification institutions made it repeatable.
